Rails 2 are arranged parallel to each other so as to be separated from each other, and a rail body 10 formed by connecting them to each other is erected on one side in the cross-sectional surface of the hoistway 1 in which a car 3 is to be raised and lowered. A wrapping transmission means from which the car 3 is suspended is provided between the rails 2. Therefore, the distance between the wall surface of the hoistway 1 other than the getting on and off port and the rail body 12 and the outer surface of the car 3 can be reduced. Accordingly, the specified horizontal cross-sectional area of the hoistway l in relation to the horizontal projected area of the car 3 can be narrowed, and the car 3 can be easily installed in the hoistway 1 having the small horizontal cross-sectional area. Therefore, cost of construction of a building in which a small-sized elevator device is to be installed is reduced.
