To provide a smelting reduction method of nickel ore, by which the smelting reduction rate is not obstructed while restraining eroding rate of a lining refractory, in a temp.-raising and slag-making period from the initial stage slag composition to the target slag composition.
In the smelting reduction method in which a smelting reduction furnace 1 lined with a magnesia-base refractory is used and a temp.-raising and slag-making period and a successive smelting reduction period are provided and the smelting reduction of the nickel ore is executed with carbonaceous material, magnesia-containing raw material is added in the temp.-raising and slag-making period so that the basicity (CaO/SiO2) of the molten slag for slag- making satisfies the range of 0.6-1.2 and the magnesia content becomes ≥30wt.%.
