To obtain a smooth muscle relaxant having excellent relaxant action for smooth muscles and also expressing excellent relaxant action on matrical smooth muscle and vascular smooth muscle.
This smooth muscle relaxant contains one or more of ligustilide dimer selected from the compounds expressed by formulas I, II and III, their enantiamers and their racemic bodies as effective ingredients. The compound of formula III is new and is obtained by extracting angelicae radix from China with hexane, fractionating, purifying and crystallizing the extract. The compound can be formulated in tablets, granules, fine granules, powders, injections, etc., by usual methods. The dose is 0.1-500mg dimer of ligustilide/adult/day and is administered in 1-3 times a day. The relaxant can be used for preventing and curing urgent premature birth, dysmenorrhea, hypertension, etc.
