Abstract:

To obtain a centipede-type polymer which, when extended with an oil or a low-molecular component, gives a useful soft material having high vibrationdamping properties by reacting specified amts. of a substd. ethylene/ maleimide copolymer, a maleinized polyalkylene, and a diamine under substantially anhydrous conditions.

About 50-99 wt.% (R1(R2) ethylene/maleimide copolymer, about 1-50 wt.% maleated polyalkylene, and about 0.1-10 wt.% diamine are reacted under conditions substantially anhydrous enough to form a polyalkylene-grafted (R1(R2) ethylene/maleimide centipede-type polymer. In the formula, R1 and R2 are each an optionally substd. 1-20C alkyl group. The (R1(R2) ethylene/maleimide copolymer is prepd. by imidizing an (R1(R2) ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymer with a prim. amine.
