Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a soil conditioner composed mainly of a sulfonated PS foam or its salt and capable of imparting excellent water retentivity, fertilizer retentivity, and air permeability to soil by sulfonating a PS foam even to the depths thereof with a sulfonating agent and, if necessary, forming a salt thereof.

CONSTITUTION: A PS foam is sulfonated even to the depths thereof with at least one sulfonating agent selected from, e.g. fuming sulfuric acid, chloro- or fluorosulfonic acid, and SO3, and if necessary, treated with, e.g. an alkali (alkaline earth) metal hydroxide or chloride (e.g. CaCl2) to form a salt thereof.
