Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject additive having a specific reduced viscosity and having excellent effects on paper and pulp such as filterability improvement, loading material yield improvement, paper strengthening, etc., consisting of a specific cationic polymer having amidine structure in the main chain.
CONSTITUTION: A four-necked flask equipped with an agitator, nitrogen intake tube and cooling tube is charged with a mixture of acrylonitrile with N- vinylformamide and desalted water, followed by raising temperature to 60°C under agitation in a nitrogen gas flow, and a radical polymerization initiator is added to the system to conduct polymerization for 3hr; the resultant polymer is deposited in water and 2 equivalent amount conc. HCl based on the formyl group in the polymer is added to the polymer, which is then held for 4hr to amidinate the polymer, thus obtaining the objective additive consisting of a cationic polymer 0.1-10dl/g in reduced viscosity (at a level of 0.1g/dl in 1N saline solution at 25°C), made up of (1) 20-90mol% of unit(s) of formula I and/or formula II (R1 and R2 are each H or methyl; X is anion), (2) 0-2mol% of unit of formula III (R3 is 1-4C alkyl or H) and (3) each 0-70mol% of units of formula IV and V.
