To provide a catalyst system which makes it possible to produce an ethylene polymer having high polymerization activity and high swell ratio, with good powder properties and without causing fouling.
The solid catalyst component for ethylene polymerization is obtained by treating an inorganic magnesium compound (M) with a heterocyclic compound (D) at a molar ratio (D/M) satisfying 0.01<D/M<0.5, then with a titanium compound (T), and with an organoaluminum compound (A) represented by the formula: (R1)m(R2)nAl(X)3-m-n [wherein R1 and R2 are each a 1-20C alkyl; X is halogeno; and m+n=(1 or 2)] in an amount sufficient to give a molar ratio (A/M) satisfying 0.1<A/M<100. The catalyst consists of this catalyst component and an organoaluminum compound. The catalyst is used for the process for producing an ethylene polymer.
