This solid catalyst component for olefin polymerization comprises a magnesium compound, a titanium compound, a halogen compound and an electron-donating compound having at least one oxygenic functional group (except an ester group, an ether group and a carbonyl group) and having an atomic charge in the range of -0.80 to -0.30 (as determined by quantum chemistry calculation). The above functional group can be represented by the formula: M1-O-M2 (M1 and M2 are each an element selected from among lithium, beryllium, magnesium, zinc, aluminum, gallium, indium, thallium, carbon, silicon, germanium, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur, provided that they are not simultaneously carbon atoms).
