PURPOSE: To obtain a solid electrochemical element having the effect of an actuator by migrating constituting atoms from the one of a pair of materials to the other by conduction of electricity and transducing electrical energy to mechanical work.
CONSTITUTION: When electric current is passed from a terminal 4 to a terminal 5, the atoms constituting an ion acceptive layer 1 are ionized, pass a solid electrolyte layer 3 and arrive at an ion acceptive layer 2 by which the ions are reduced and accepted. Since the number of the constituting atoms of the layer 1 decreases, the volume thereof decreases and the layer contracts longitudinally. A structure body 10 curves upward. There are TiS2 and TaS2 which are adaptable as the ion acceptor. The ions to be migrated are beforehand accepted; for example, copper ions are beforehand accepted in TiS2 to make CuxTiS2 (0<x<1). There is a compd. consisting of three components; for example, RbCl, CuCl, CuI for copper ions as the solid electrolyte.
