PURPOSE: To obtain a low cost gas sensor withstanding use at a high temp. and capable of measuring SO2-concn. well, by forming a solid electrolyte form β- alumina or β"-alumina while using a coexisting powder of β-alumina and α- alumina or β"-alumina as a reference electrode material.
CONSTITUTION: Pt-electrodes 2a, 2b are baked to the outer peripheral part and inner bottom part of a bottomed pipe 1 compresing β-alumina being a solid electrolyte while a coexisting powder 3 of β-alumina and α-alumina or β"-alumina being a reference electrode material is charged to the bottom part of the bottomed pipe 1 and the upper part thereof has a diameter smaller than that of the bottomed pipe 1 and met with an α-alumina pipe 4 inserted into the pipe 1. A Pt-lead wire 5 extending so as to be contacted with the Pt-electrode 2b of the bottom part of the bottomed pipe 1 is provided in the α-alumina pipe 4. In measuring SO2-concn. by using this sensor, the outer surface of the sensor is exposed to SO2-gas to generated electromotive force in the solid electrolyte and said electromotive force is measured by providing a voltmeter between the electrodes under a continuity state provided to the inner and outer surfaces of the pipe 2 to determine SO2-gas concn.
