Abstract:

To provide a solid polymer electrolyte fuel cell in favor of compatibility between high gas permeability and high moisture retention of a gas diffusion electrode.

The fuel cell has a solid polymer electrolyte film 1, a catalyst layer for fuel electrode 2, a gas diffusion electrode for fuel electrode 3, a gas flow distribution plate for fuel electrode 4, a catalyst layer for oxidizer electrode 5, a gas diffusion electrode for oxidizer electrode 6, and a gas flow distribution plate for oxidizer electrode 7. At least one of the gas diffusion electrode for oxidizer electrode 6 and the gas diffusion electrode for fuel electrode 3 has a multi-layer structure having: a rough layer 80 which has gas transmittance and is relatively low in density; an inner tight layer 82 which faces the catalyst layers 5, 2 and is relatively higher in density than the rough layer 80; and an outer tight layer 84 which faces the gas flow distribution plates 7, 4 and is relatively higher in density than the rough layer 80.
