A column parallel AD conversion unit has a plurality of ADCs arranged in the row direction which perform the AD conversion of an electric signal output by imaging elements in a pixel array functioning as an image pickup unit having a plurality of imaging elements. The ADCs include a comparator having in its input stage a differential pair configured with a first transistor and a second transistor, the first and the second transistors being divided into the same number of a plurality of divided transistors each. An arrangement pattern of the plurality of divided transistors constituting comparators in a prescribed column and an arrangement pattern of the plurality of divided transistors constituting comparators in an adjacent column abutting on the prescribed column are different. This technique can be applied to a solid state image pickup device such as an image sensor for photographing an image.
