PURPOSE: To provide a solid state image pickup device which can reproduce the still images of high resolution and also can reproduce the images of low power loss with high dynamic image resolution and without causing any vertical jitter in a monitoring mode.
CONSTITUTION: The electric charge stored in four types of many photoelectric conversion element 3 arranged in a matrix form are fetched by plural columns of vertical VCCDs 4 arranged corresponding to the elements 3. Then the electric charge stored in each VCCD 4 is transferred in sequence to a horizontal HCCD 5 which is connected in common to those VCCDs 4. Then the electric charge stored in the HCCD 5 is successively transferred and the signal charge is read out. When such a solid state image pickup device is driven, the electric charge of two types of photoelectric transducers A1, A2, B1 and B2 are simultaneously transferred to the VCCDs 5. Then the electric charge of the VCCDs 4 are vertically transferred to the signal reading HCCD 5 and a charge sweep-away means 7 in a monitoring mode. Then only the electric charge transferred to the HCCD 5 is read out as a signal and the electric charge transferred to the means 7 is swept away. Therefore the same conditions are secured in both still and monitoring modes.
