PURPOSE: To improve the degradation in measurement accuracy caused by dispersion among elements and to obtain the simple solid-state image pickup device by eliminating a component of a background light or the like with charge coupling among an integration device, a counter circuit and a capacitive element so as to extract only an optical component of a specific object.
CONSTITUTION: In the configuration of the solid-state image pickup device, when only a background light is received, a count corresponding to the luminous intensity of the background light is stored in a counter circuit 10 and a charge corresponding to the luminous intensity of the background light is stored in a 2nd capacitive element C3. Upon the receipt of a light and a background light of a specific portion, the counter circuit 10 counts down from its count up to zero and the charge stored newly in a 1st integration device for the period and the charge having been stored in the 2nd capacitive element C3 are coupled, then the background light component is eliminated by charge coupling. An output of the 2nd integration device 7 appears as a voltage corresponding to the luminous intensity of the light of a specific portion.
