To obtain a biocompatible material having high durability and biocompatibility by grafting a free-radical-polymerizable monomer onto a soluble cellulose deriv. having peroxyester groups bonded in a homogeneous system.
This soluble cellulose driv. is obtd. by reacting a halogenated peroxyester compd. (e.g. t-butyl peroxy-2-bromoacetate) with a soluble cellulose (e.g. methylcellulose having a degree of substitution of 1.6-2.2) in the presence of a basic compd. (e.g. lithium hydride) and is represented by the formula (where R1 is H, methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl, etc.; R2 is a 1-15C divalent hydrocarbon group; R3 is a 4-15C monovalent hydrocarbon group; and (m) is 0.001-1). An example of the free-radical-polymerizable monomer is 2-(meth) acryloyloxyethyl-2-(trimethylammonio)ethyl phosphate. The reaction is conduted at -10°C to 10°C for 4-48hr.
