PURPOSE: To provide a stable source document feeder which can carry a sheet material source document at fixed speed and does not cause image blurring in the case of reading the image of the source document by the use of a read part while carrying the source document by using a wide belt.
CONSTITUTION: The sheet material source document fed by a separation part (a carrying roller 15 and a separation belt 14) is read by the read part provided in the middle of a platen glass 3 while it is carried by the wide belt 7 on the plate glass 3. In such a case, a distance between the read part and the separation part is set longer than the length of the sheet material source document. Thus, the trailing edge of the sheet material source document has already passed through the separation part before starting reading, so that the trailing edge of the sheet material source document is prevented from being shaken in the midst of reading, and image blurring caused by the shake of the trailing edge is prevented.
