Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enable the optical modulation of optical information with high efficiency without converting the information to electric information by using an optical wave coupler having a composite layer composed of a material which is changed in refractive index by photoirradiation and a metal. CONSTITUTION:The argon ion laser emitted from a laser oscillator 1 is collimated to collimated beams of light by a beam expander 2 and these beams are passed through a slide film 3. The boundary 12 of a silver thin film 6 and an org. dyestuff-contg. film 5 is irradiated with these beams in such a manner that beams are imaged on this boundary by an imaging lens 4 from the atm. side of the composite layer on the base of a prism. On the other hand, the helium neon laser emitted from a laser oscillator 9 generating reading out light is made incident in the state of the collimated beams of light by a beam expander 8. The written information is obtd. in the form that the intensity of the reacting out light is modulated in space distribution on a screen 11 via the imaging lens 10 by the plasmon resonance at the boundary between the org. dyestuff-contg. film 5 of a refractive index changing material and the silver thin film 6.
