To provide a spacer for a high contrast liquid crystal display element which prevent abnormal aligning phenomenon and annual ring phenomenon generated in the periphery of the spacer, when normal voltage is applied and when high voltage is applied, and still more after vibration or shock is applied to the liquid crystal display element and the liquid crystal display element.
The spacer for the liquid crystal display element is characterized by containing ≥1 ng/m2 functional groups expressed by a formula R-NH- (in the formula, R expresses 4-22C hydrocarbyl group) on surfaces of plastic fine spherical bodies obtained by polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated group- containing monomer which contains ≥5 wt.% monomer having at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups and the liquid crystal display element utilizing them is disclosed.
