To prevent internal pressure of a combustion chamber from being increased seriously more than a control pressure during a time lag even if the time lag occurs in starting the movement of a sub-chamber piston after the combustion pressure reaches the control pressure, in a spark ignition internal combustion engine that includes a variable capacity sub-chamber communicated to the combustion chamber and is configured to move the sub-chamber piston upon the combustion pressure reaching the control pressure to increase a capacity of the sub-chamber and to suppress an increase in internal pressure of the combustion chamber.
A spark ignition internal combustion engine includes a variable capacity small sub-chamber 60' communicated to a combustion chamber, in addition to a sub-chamber 60. The spark ignition internal combustion engine is configured so that a small sub-chamber piston 55' is moved upon a combustion pressure reaching a preset pressure that is lower than a control pressure to increase a capacity of the small sub-chamber and to reduce an internal pressure increase rate of the combustion chamber.
