Abstract:

To reduce smoke and NOx while securing an output in a high load range in a stratified charge combustion range.

In a spark ignition type direct injection engine, in each cylinder, axes of specific nozzle holes in a multiple hole type fuel injection valve 18 are directed to pass near the end of the electrode E of an ignition plug 16 and near an extension of the electrode. In a predetermined operation range which is a low-rotation speed and low-load range, stratified charge combustion is performed with fuel injection made at least in the latter half of a compression stroke. For each cylinder, the value associated with the indicated mean effective pressure is grasped and in a high load range in a predetermined operation range, fuel injection timing in a cylinder in which the grasped indicated mean effective pressure is relatively small is advanced as compared with other cylinders.
