To provide a spark ignition type engine having improved ignitability and combustion stability for producing even greater fuel consumption improving effects while producing fuel consumption improving effects with lean combustion and pumping loss reduction.
The spark ignition type engine 1 wherein such a two-cylinder connected condition is established that burnt gas exhausted from preceding cylinders 2A, 2D is introduced via a cylinder-to-cylinder gas passage 22 into following cylinders 2B, 2C as it is, comprises a combustion control means for controlling lean air-fuel ratio combustion to be performed in the preceding cylinders 2A, 2D and combustion to be performed together with newly supplied fuel by introducing the burnt gas from the preceding cylinders 2A, 2D to the following cylinders 2B, 2C, and injectors 9 provided in the cylinders 2A-2D for cylinder injection. The atomizing angles of the injectors 9a in the preceding cylinders are set to be smaller than the atomizing angles of the injectors 9b in the following cylinders. The injectors 9a in the preceding cylinders inject the atomized fuel to be stratified around spark plugs 7a.
