In this spark ignition type engine provided with a choke valve on the intake upstream side of a fuel mixer, the choke valve is connected interlockingly to a valve system actuator, the valve system actuator is linked with a control means, and the control means is linked with an engine temperature detecting means. Before starting an engine, the control means sets based on an engine temperature, the full closure retaining time TO of the choke valve 5, a first valve opening angle K1, and a second valve opening angle K2 greater than the first valve opening angle K1. When starting the engine, the choke valve is controlled by the control of the control means based on the above-mentioned setting.
