PURPOSE: To prevent engaging pressure from surging, and thereby surely prevent the occurrence of shift quality by keeping engaging pressure low to the extent that only a piston can be moved when engaging pressure is started to be supplied, and controlling the aforesaid pressure to be high after a specified period of time has elapsed when engaging pressure used for engaging a friction engagement means, is controlled by a pressure control valve.
CONSTITUTION: In the automatic transmission A where a friction engagement means 2 such as clutches, brakes and the like is engaged/disengaged by operating a piston 1 by means of hydraulic pressure, and a power transmitting path in a gear train is thereby changed, so that a plurality of steps in gear shifting can thereby be obtained, hydraulic pressure to be supplied to the friction engagement means 2 is controlled by a pressure control valve 3. In this case, when speed change, by which the friction engagement means 2 is supposed to be engaged, is detected by a speed change detection means 4, the pressure control value of the pressure control valve 3 is set by a low pressure standby means 5 at a low value to the extent that only the piston 1 is moved. After the pressure has been kept low for a specified period of time, the pressure control value is so constituted that the engaging pressure of the friction engagement means 2 is gradually increased by a pressure boosting means 6, so that engaging pressure is thereby prevented from surging.
