To provide a spherical surface machining method and machining device capable of applying convex spherical mirror-finished surface machining of high accuracy to the end face of a bar member such as an optical fiber connector without forming a flaw or tear on the end face.
This spherical surface machining device comprises a polishing table 3 provided with a guide face 3 of recessed circular arc cross section on the surface; a polishing tape 2' (CeO2 abrasive grains and binder resin) wound in a roll; a mechanism for making the polishing tape 2' travel; a mechanism for bringing an optical connector 1 and the polishing tape 2' on the polishing table 3 into contact with each other with constant load; a mechanism for reciprocating the optical connector 1 on the guide face 3a of the polishing table 4 longitudinally while rotating the optical connector 1; and a mechanism for forming a uniform polishing liquid layer on the polishing tape 2'.
