To provide a spindle carrier having high workability with which work with a crane is eliminated, an outer cylinder gear can be easily and rapidly assembled to the end part of a roll, the outer cylinder gear or the like does not fall at the detaching and the outer cylinder gear is successfully inserted in and engaged with the gear in the end part of the roll.
This spindle carrier has a pair of clamp members 24, 25 for supporting a spindle 15 from both sides, 1st cylinders 29, 29 for operating the clamp members, 2nd cylinders 33, 34 for vertically moving the clamp members and a hydraulic circuit 35 for sending out oil pressure to the 2nd cylinders. In the hydraulic circuit 35, a balance circuit with which, at the time of adjusting the height of the spindle, the oil pressure of the 2nd cylinders 33, 34 is set to higher pressure than the weight of the spindle so that the clamp members can be vertically moved and, at the time of engaging and connecting the outer cylinder gear, the oil pressure of the 2nd cylinders 33, 34 is set to lower pressure which is approximately equal to the weight of the spindle so that the outer cylinder gear can be smoothly attached, detached and engaged by inclining the spindle is provided.
