Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a composition that contains a macro-ring lactone isolated from Southwest Indian Ocean marine sponge and is effective for inhibiting the growth of human cancer cells.
CONSTITUTION: This composition contains a compound of the formula (R is Cl, H; R1 is H, COCH3), in other words, spongistatin 5 where R=Cl; spongistatin 7 where R1=H, R=H, spongistatin 8 where R1=COCH3, R=H; spongistatin 9 where R1=COCH3, R=Cl. These compounds are extracted from Southern Indian Ocean marine sponge, Spirastrella spinispirulifera (bright colored reds and purple) and isolated. This compound is useful for treatment of neoplastic disease as acute myelogenic leukemia, acute lymphocytic leulkemia, malignant melanoma, lung adenocarcinoma, ganglioneuroblastoma, lung small cell carcinoma.
