To reduce as further as possible power consumption of each of a plurality of transceiver stations constituting a spread spectrum communication system, in particular, of a mobile subscriber station unit.
In a spread spectrum communication system maintaining an initial transmission power level of a second transceiver station in an inactive state, a first transceiver station inversely spreads a reception signal using a selected chip code associated to a specific spread spectrum signal from the second transceiver station and measures a power level of the inversely spread specific signal. In the inactive state, the second transceiver station transmits sometimes the specific spread spectrum signal to the first transceiver and the first transceiver station receives the specific spread spectrum signal to measure a noise power level in a communication channels, estimates a system transmission power level, compares the measured value and estimated value, and transmits an automatic power control (APC) signal to the second transceiver station on the basis of a result of the comparison. In response to the APC signal, the second transceiver station adjusts the initial transmission power level.
