To obtain a squarylium metal chelate compound advantageously useful as a recording material in an optical recording medium applicable to a rewritable DVD (digital versatile disk) disc system and an optical recording medium having excellent recording properties, light resistance and storage stability using the same.
The squarylium metal chelate compound is represented by formula (1) [M is a metal atom having coordination ability; (a) is different from (b), (c) may be the same to or different from (a) or (b) and (a), (b) and (c) are each a squarylium coloring matter type ligand represented by formula (2) [R1 and R2 are each the same or different, an alkyl group which may contain a substituent group, an aralkyl group which may contain a substituent group, an aryl group which may contain a substituent group or a heterocyclic group which may contain a substituent group; X is an aryl group which may contain a substituent group, a heterocyclic group which may contain a substituent group or Z3=CH (Z3 is a heterocyclic group which may contain a substituent group)]; (m) is 0 or 1].
