Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition that has an excellent thermal stability by admixing a specific novolak type epoxy compound to a flame-retardant styrene resin comprising a styrene resin and a specific amount of bromine flame retarder.
SOLUTION: The objective composition is obtained by adding 0.01-5.0 pts.wt. of a phenol novolak type epoxy compound that is prepared by reaction of a novolak resin of formula I (R1 is H, methyl; n≥0), at least one of phenols of formulas II-VI (R2 is same as R1) and an epihalohydrin and treatment of the reaction mixture with an alkali hydroxide, or prepared by reaction of a novolak resin of formula I with an epihalohydrin followed by treatment of the product with an alkali hydroxide, then reaction of the resultant precursor with at least one kind of phenols of formula I or formulas II-VI, to a flame- retardant styrene resin that is composed of 100 pts.wt. of a styrene resin and 1-50 pts.wt. of a bromine flame retarder.
