PURPOSE: To offer an image fetching device and an image fetching method by which an excellent image with high accuracy can be fetched regardless of the surface state of a work and which can detect the floating of the lead of the work.

CONSTITUTION: A work holding mechanism 16 which holds the work 2 where the leads 20... are allowed to protrude from a back side, an illuminating body 24 which illuminates the work 2 from a front side and which approaches to and separates from the work 2, reflectors 26 and 26 which are positioned on the back side of the work 2 and which reflect light emitted from the illuminating body 24 to the work 2 side so as to form the shadow of the work 2 on the front side of the work 2, and an image pickup camera 23 for the work which picks up the shadow of the work 2 are provided, so that the work 2 held from the back side is illuminated from the front side, the shadow of the work 2 is formed on the front side of the work 2 by reflecting the illuminating light to the work 2 side, and the shadow of the work 2 is picked up while a distance between the work 2 and the illuminating body 24 is adjusted.
