PURPOSE: To obtain a stainless steel material having a paint film with high adhesive strength by forming an oxide film on the surface of a stainless steel material, coating the oxide film with paint, and baking the paint.

CONSTITUTION: An oxide film 13 is formed on the surface of a stainless steel material 11 by electrolytic coloring, chemical coloring, tempering or other means. The oxide film 13 is coated with acrylic resin paint, melamine resin paint or other arbitrary paint, and the paint is baked to form a paint film 12. The paint film 12 adheres firmly to the oxide film 13 joining to the material 11 as one body. By this method a coated stainless steel material having a color pattern is inexpensively obtd. using common paint.
