PURPOSE: To make an engine in small size by sensing the minimal volume of the space in which the fluid surrounded by a cylinder and a piston and compressed, is inhaled and compressed, adjusting the minimal volume according to this detection signal, and thereby raising the mean pressure in said space.
CONSTITUTION: In a starling engine formed above a shaft sealing device 18, the phase angle in the position of a displacer 24 is normally advanced compared with the phase angle in the position of a piston 25. If a piston 25 is raised and sunk in a compressor formed below the same shaft sealing device 18, on the other hand, the fluid first flows from a path 26 into a compression chamber 41 via a suction valve 27 and is exhausted from a path 34 after following a discharge valve 28 and voids 39, 40. If at this time, the lower dead point of a flange 36 of the piston 25 is dislocated from the optimum position, a controller 37 rotates a motor 32 according to the detection signal from a location sensor 35. Therefore, a compression coil spring 30 changes the force to push the piston 25 with the aid of transmission means 31, 33, 29, and thus location adjustment is made.
