To provide a component made of steel having a spline excellent in fatigue resistance, and in which sufficient compressive residual stress can be applied to the edge part of the spline, and to provide a method for improving the fatigue strength.
The component made of steel having a spline contains, by mass, 0.1 to 0.8% C, 0.05 to 2.5% Si, 0.2 to 3% Mn, 0.005 to 0.1% Al and 0.001 to 0.02% N, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and in which the compressive residual stress in the surface layer of the edge part in the spline satisfies the relational expression of -2.4<(the residual stress [MPa])/(the surface Vickers hardness Hv.)<-1.5. Further, in the method for improving the fatigue strength of the component made of steel having the spline, the edge part of the spline is struck with a vibration terminal vibrating at the frequency of 10 k to 60 kHz and at the amplitude of 0.5 to 50 μm.
