To provide a steering column structure for an automobile capable of preventing the interference of an upper shroud with a crush pad in collision of a vehicle, minimizing the collision of driver's knees with the shroud to improve the safety in collision, and reducing the vibration and noise of a steering wheel.

This steering column structure includes an upper shroud of which a cross section from a part kept into contact with the crush pad toward an upper side of the steering column, is formed in parallel with a line of action to which the collapse force of the steering column acts or in a state of being gradually narrowed, and a lower shroud having a recessed part on a center side of the steering column at a position near the driver's knees.
