PURPOSE: To provide an automobile steering system excellent in layout and generality of use and easy to change items.

CONSTITUTION: The dash panel of an automobile is provided with a rack and pinion unit 15 with a power assistor, and a dummy relay rod 16 is disposed near the rear side of a suspension cross member 3. Both lateral end parts of the dummy relay rod 16 are respectively connected to the knuckle arms 5 of lateral front wheels 1 through a lateral pair of tie rods 17. Screw mechanism 40 for adjusting shaft length is provided near each end part of the dummy relay rod 16. Link mechanism 19 is provided to transmit the vehicle width direction displacement of the rack member 18 of the rack and pinion unit 15 to the dummy relay rod 16. The link mechanism 19 can adjust a displacement transmission ratio.
