The steering wheel apparatus for an automobile includes a steering wheel case 32 which is fixed to the panel 30 of the automobile and holds a cylinder lock 31 for operating a locking device in a chassis of the automobile, and a steering wheel main body 33 operably linked to the steering wheel case 32. According to the steering wheel apparatus, the cylinder lock 31 includes a rotor 3 rotatably inserted in a cylinder case 4. The rotor 3 has tumblers 2 installed therein, which tumblers trace a code forming section 1a formed in an inserted key plate 1, to thereby form a lock-side unlocking code conforming to a key-side unlocking code produced by the code forming section 1a. The tumblers 2 are set so as to be in a state where the lock-side unlocking code can be formed in response to an identification section 5 formed in the key plate 1.
