PURPOSE: To enable sure sterilization of a lactoferrin-containing preparation without deteriorating the physiological function of lactoferrin by applying high pressure higher than a specific level to a lactoferrin-containing preparation.
CONSTITUTION: The preparation to be sterilized contains lactoferrin which is an iron-bonding glycoprotein existing in the milk, saliva, plasma, etc., of mammal and further contains an aqueous liquid such as milk as a medium. The lactoferrin-containing preparation is sterilized by applying a pressure exceeding 2,000atm and preferably not higher than 6,000atm. Sterilization of the lactoferrin-containing preparation can be performed by the above process, in contrast with thermal sterilization process, without deteriorating the physiological functions of lactoferrin such as iron-absorption promoting action in intestines and cell proliferation promoting action of lymphocyte caused by the iron-bonding activity of lactoferrin. The sterilized lactoferrin-containing preparation is suitable as drink, etc.
