NEW MATERIAL:The steroid compound of formula I [W and X together form >C=O or >CH(OH) in the form of >W-X; Y and Z together form >C=CH- or group of formula II in the form of >Y-Z-; OR1 and OR2 are acyloxy, sulfate residue, or phosphate residue].
EXAMPLE: 17α, 21-Dihydroxy-3, 3-ethylenedioxy-9α-fluoro- 5-pregnene-11,20-dione- 17, 21-diacetate.
USE: Intermediate useful for introducing a functional group to the 6-position of a physiologically active 9α-corticoid.
PROCESS: The 17α, 21-dihydroxy-9α-fluoro-4-pregnene-3, 11, 10-trione-17,21-diester which can be obtained by using the easily and inexpensively available hydrocortisone-21-ester of formula III as a starting material, is ketalized to obtain a compound of formula I wherein W-X is C=O and Y-Z is C=CH (the compound of formula V). The W-X group can be converted to CCH(OH) by reduction. Treatment of the above compounds with a peracid affords another compound of formula I wherein Y-Z is group of formula II.
