PURPOSE: To obtain a new straight-chain nitron compound capable of efficiently scavenging unstable free radical species such as in vivo superoxide radicals excellent in light stability, thermal stability and hydrophilicity, thus useful as a spin trapping agent.
CONSTITUTION: This spin trapping agent is expressesed by the formula (R1, R2, and R3 are H or a 1-6 C alkyl group; R4 is H, carboxyl or sulfonyl group), e.g. N-pentamethylphenyl-α-phenylnitron. This exemplified compound is obtained by nitrating pentamethylbenzene with nitric acid, etc., to obtain pentamethylnitrobenzene, followed by reducing the nitro group of the resultant compound with zinc in the presence of ammonium chloride to obtain pentamethylhydroxyaminobenzene, which is then coupled with benzaldehyde.
