PURPOSE: To make the measurement simple and quick, by reading the distance of movement of the interference fringes of a material to be measured on the scale of a distance measuring means by direct obervation or projection.
CONSTITUTION: A linking member 25 is grasped by the hand, and a glass plate 86 as a body to be measured is positioned between a projecting part 21 and a detecting part 22. Then, with a rock crystal wedge 64 being observed through a small hole 84b, the wedge is rotated together with a scale plate 60. The longitudinal direction of the rock crystal wedge 64 is aligned with an edge 86a of the glass plate 86 in parallel. Then, under the state a screw 57 being loosened, a ring 55 is turned and a polarizing plate 56 is turned around a central axis A0 so that the plate 56 intersects with the vibration surface of a light detecting plate 76 at a right angle. Then, black interference fringes are observed on the rock crystal wedge 64 within the field of view. At this time, in response to the internal stress of the glass plate 86, the fringes are moved from the line of zero on the scale. The amount of movement is read out.
