PURPOSE: To provide a stress transmitting liquid crystal compound excellent in the durability and stability by setting the shear storing modulus of elasticity measured in a smetic D phase to the specified magnification of the shear storing modulus of elasticity measured in a liquid crystal phase or isotropic phase other than the smetic D phase of the compound.
CONSTITUTION: At least one of the shear storing modulus of elasticity or kinematic viscosity measured in the smetic D phase of compound having the smetic D phase is set to 100 times or more of the shear storing modulus of elasticity or kinematic viscosity measured in the liquid crystal phase or isotropic phase other than the smetic D phase of the compound. Here, the compound having the smetic D phase is one represented by a formula in which X is nitro group or cyano group and n is an integer of 15-26. The temperature of liquid crystal compound is changed so that the phase is transferred from the phase other than the smetic D phase to the smetic D phase or vice versa and the shear storing modulus of elasticity or kinematic viscosity produced then is changed to transmit stress.
