To enhance combustion efficiency by uniforming combustion and reducing the volume of a cavity right under an auxiliary chamber and a crevice volume to reduce emission of NOx and unburned hydrocarbon, prevent a ring carrier part from being separated from a piston due to nonuniform temperature and enhance the life of the piston by avoiding local high temperature of the piston caused by collision of a flame jet to thereby improve the durability of the piston and reduce manufacturing cost of the piston.
In a divided chamber type internal combustion engine having a main combustion chamber (6) and auxiliary chamber (8), a piston top surface (2a) is constituted of the plane. In a fluid passage (9) for cooling a piston, a radial direction of the piston is overlapped with a position where a flame jet (J) injected from a nozzle (7) into the main combustion chamber (6) collides with the piston top surface (2a) to shorten the distance between the piston ring and the piston top surface and dramatically reduce the crevice volume.
