The subsidiary chamber type internal combustion engine 1 is equipped with the main combustion chamber 63, a subsidiary combustion chamber 61, a volume varying mechanism 70 and an ECU 40. The subsidiary chamber 61 is situated next to the combustion chamber 63. The volume varying mechanism 70 varies a volume of the subsidiary chamber 61. The ECU 40 controls the volume varying mechanism 70 to lessen the volume of the subsidiary chamber 61 for a term of the combustion performed in the subsidiary chamber 61. Then, the ECU 40 controls the volume varying mechanism 70 to vary timing for enlarging the volume of the subsidiary chamber 61 in response to an operative condition.
