NEW MATERIAL: A compd. represented by formula I (wherein X1 and X2 are Cl, Br or I, R1-R4 are F, CF3, CN, NO2, 1-18C alkoxy, 1-18C alkylthio, 6-18C aryl, 6-16C aryloxy, 6-18C arylthio, 3-18C trialkylsilyl, COOR5 or COX, 1-3 groups of R1-R4 are H, Cl or Br and the fourth group of them is the aforementioned group, R5 is H or a group obtained by removing OH from alcohl and X is NH2 or 1-18C monovalent groups of primary-secondary amines).
EXAMPLE: 5-methoxy-1,2-dibromobenzocyclobutene.
USE: An intermediate of a photosensitizer, a photoinitiator or anthraquinone or naphthacenequinone useful as an electrochromic display.
PROCESS: A compd. represented by formula II (wherein Y1 and Y2 are Cl or Br) is reacted with NaI in the presence of acetonitrile or acetone at 40°C or higher to obtain the compd. represented by formula I.
