To provide a substrate for display elements which is superior in handleability and flexibility, and allows the thickness-direction phase difference of an entire display element to be controlled, and allows the thickness of a liquid crystal display device to be reduced.
The substrate for display elements includes inorganic glass, a first thermoplastic resin layer which is formed on one side of the inorganic glass and has a refractive index ellipsoid satisfying nz>nx=ny, and a second thermoplastic resin layer which is formed on the other side of the inorganic glass and has a refractive index ellipsoid satisfying nx=ny>nz. Consequently, the phase difference of the substrate for display elements can be controlled. The number of retardation plates to be laminated can be reduced when the substrate is used in a liquid crystal display device. Furthermore, the substrate for display elements has thermoplastic resin layers formed on both sides of the inorganic glass, thereby improving handleability and flexibility.
