LIGHT ATTENUATOR AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE: To eliminate dependency on wavelength and to obtain a specified attenuation quantity regardless of the wavelength of light by blending a dopant to more largely attenuate transmitted light for shorter wavelength of light signals in an optical fiber.
CONSTITUTION: This optical attenuator 5 has a columnar coupling part 5A and internally has a cavity 5B existing at the center thereof. The part of the cavity 5B has a bend imparting part 8. Both ends of the optical fiber 7 are arranged, fitted and fixed to the center of the coupling part 5A. Vanadium V is incorporated as the dopant into the optical fiber 7 and two kinds of the light signals of the different wavelengths are inputted therein from one end and an adjusting screw 13 is adjusted so that the output levels of both are nearly equaled to each other. Namely, the light signals of the longer wavelength are more largely attenuated if the specified bend is imparted on the optical fiber 7 but if the dopant to more largely attenuate the transmitted light of the shorter wavelength is blended in the optical fiber 7, the light signals of the short wavelength and the light signal of the long wavelength are nearly uniformly attenuated when viewed over the entire part of the optical fiber 7.
