NEW MATERIAL: Sulfated hydroxyalkyl polyethylene glycol and hydroxyalkyl polypropylene glycol ethers of formula I (where R1 is H or a 1-16C alkyl; R2 is a 1-22C alkyl; R3 is H or a 1-16 alkyl; R4 is H or methyl; M is H, ammonium, a 1-4C alkyl-ammonium, etc., 1≤n≤30; the total number of the C atoms of R1 and R3 is 6-15) and a mixture of them.
USE: Low foaming wetting agents, raw materials for detergents and raw materials for cosmetic washing and cleaning agents.
PROCESS: The compds. of formula I are obtd. by allowing epoxides of formula II to react with alcohol alkoxylates of formula III at a high temp. in the presence of a catalyst such as sodium methylate and allowing the resultant compds. of formula IV to react with a sulfating agent such as gaseous sulfur trioxide at 10-40°C.
