Abstract:

PURPOSE:To make a polymer useful as a slump loss reducing type additive for a cement composition, a mud stabilizer, or the like by sulfonating a copolymer of a specific component with maleic anhydride. CONSTITUTION:A component (A) having reactive double bonds in an aromatic hydrocarbon oil (naphtha oil) which contains indene as a main component and comprises 70-99wt.% (hereinafter merely %) indene, 0.5-29.5% styrene and 0.5-29.5% one or more components selected from the group consisting of (alpha-) methylstyrene, methylidene, dimethylstyrene and trimethylstyrene in a total of 5% or more is polymerized with maleic anhydride (B) in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator with the molar ratio of the components (A) to (B) of about 1/1 to produce a copolymer. The resulting copolymer is reacted with a sulfonating agent [e.g., (fuming) sulfuric acid] to sulfonate it to produce the title copolymer.
