Abstract:

To selectively and quantitatively sulfonate a phenol with a sulfonating agent in a specific solvent without discoloration and danger, for example, explosion to prepare sulfonated products which is useful as an intermediate for dyes and medicines.

In (A) a solvent of a dialkyl carbonate of formula I (R1 and R2 are each a 1-4C alkyl) such as dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate or diisopropyl carbonate, (B) a phenol of' formula II (R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-10C alkyl), for example, phenol, catecholor resorcin is sulfonated with (C) a sulfuric or sulfurous derivative sulfonating agent such as chlorosulfonic acid at a reaction temperature of -20-90°C, particularly at -10-20°C.
