A method of manufacturing a sulfur compound adsorbent comprising a product obtained by heating a sulfuric acid containing crystalline composite hydrous oxide of zinc (II) or zinc (II) and copper (II) or cobalt (II) comprises the step of adding zinc (II) oxide to a water solution of at least one metal selected from the group of zinc (II), copper (II) and cobalt (II) to cause a reaction under the presence of sulfuric acid ions to precipitate the sulfuric acid ion containing crystalline metal hydrous oxide represented by formula of M
